This is absolutely one of our favourite hotels in France. There are few more delightful and evocative experiences in Provence than an apéritif or dinner on the tree-shaded terrace under the enormous plane and lime trees that frame the elegant house, while the setting sun in mauves and pinks slides tranquilly behind the distant hills. Owned by the Marignane Family since 1932, the Château retains its air of a southern manor, elegant yet casual, with the attentive and discreet service provided by two of the Marignane brothers, while the third, Philippe, is dedicated to producing elegant and delicious meals in the kitchen. Their elegant and charming mother can sometimes still be found behind the front desk.
The rooms are exceptionally comfortable as well as interesting for their furniture and decoration in keeping with the 18th century house. The bathrooms are spacious and newly renovated with elegant French tiles and all the amenities. The ground floor salons are elegant by day and night, but there is something especially magical about the evening dinners.
The garden extends over 4½ acres, and include a large swimming pool, where the day can pass delightfully before one notices. Great walks, and easy touring to Cassis, the Calanques, to Marseille, to Aix-en Provence, San Remy or the Luberon.
The room prices are reasonable for this special experience – from €115 to €220, depending on room and season, but do go for the “demi-pension” option and relish the breakfasts and dinners. This traditional kind of hotel is sadly becoming increasingly rare in France, but this one combines good value with an “ambiance déliceux”. Go while it still retains its delightful aura of traditional and exceptional hospitality.
