Owners Richard & Mouse Poynton were renowned hoteliers before creating the Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse. The marriage of Richard’s culinary skills and Mouse’s decorating skills with the breath-taking mountain views, crystal clear streams and the ultimate peaceful solitude of the KwaZulu-Natal, Drakensberg mountains has been a very happy one. With their professional yet understated service, this is most of all a gourmet experience to remember and also ideal for relaxation or activities.

Dinner is a sumptuous 7 course affair with no effort or expense spared to give the guests a memorable dining experience. Richard talks the guests through the menu before you sit down to enjoy his creations, and he doesn’t mind telling you that Cleopatra’s food is all about the tastes, fun and passion that go into good country cooking!

Cleopatra is tucked away in the beautiful Kamberg Valley close to Giant’s Castle Nature Reserve; and all the normal mountain pursuits such as swimming, mountain hiking and scenic walks are available. Highmoor Nature Reserve makes up 90% of the property’s border and is a UNESCO world heritage site because of its inherent beauty. It is a 10 minute drive from Cleopatra in a normal motor vehicle. There are three big Trout Dams there stocked with Rainbow Trout. Wildlife includes Eland, Reedbuck, Oribi, Jackal, Serval, Rooikat, Baboons, extensive birdlife and a huge diversity of flora. Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is situated on 500 acres of rolling hills and walking trails are available on the property as well as horse-riding nearby.

There are 184 craft stops on the famous “Midlands Meander” from the internationally acclaimed Ardmore Pottery to woodturners, to potters, to cheesemakers, weavers and much much more.

Some of the rock art in the Drakensberg dates back over 3000 years. The best sightings in the area are at Kamberg and at Giants Castle
