The Marine is one of the southern hemisphere’s most spectacular seaside Hotel. It is also a Relais & Châteaux which means great food and great sevice. Perched on the cliffs, overlooking Hermanus‘s Walker Bay, The Marine is home to 42 individually decorated bedrooms and suites, in the most chic coastal resort in the western Cape. Part of the renowed Liz McGrath collection.

Hermanus is an old-established beach resort that Cape Town’s elite have used for 150 years. An hour and a half from Cape Town, it has long been justly famous as an angler’s paradise and one of the finest fishing resorts in the world. It is celebrated for the beauty of its many wild flowers and its picturesque coastline.

In addition to its unforgettable setting, The Marine offers guests the unique opportunity to experience the finest land-based whale watching in the world. From June to September these majestic creatures can be viewed from the comfort of a beautiful Marine sea-facing bedroom or suite. This centrally located property, which gives guests the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Hermanus’s famous café culture, not only overlooks South Africa’s most pristine whale sanctuary. It is also just a stone’s throw from one of the greatest densities of the endangered Great White Shark in the world.

In addition to the Marine’s commanding 360-degree view of the surrounding seascape, the Overberg Mountains and manicured lawns, it also boasts a fascinating history that dates back to 1902.

At The Marine the attention to detail is apparent in every aspect of this remarkable property – from the personal service to the exceptional cuisine, the perfect-for-sundowners Sun Lounge and the in-house Carchele Beauty Spa. Each piece of The Marine story adds another element to an unforgettable stay.

Double Rooms

That special something … no two Marine Double Rooms are the same. The gorgeous Double Rooms offer the same exceptional décor and uncompromising style found throughout The Marine. A selection offer partial side-sea views and a handful boast their own private balconies.
In addition to the views, the Double Rooms all feature an en-suite bathroom, under floor heating, air-conditioning throughout and other luxury amenities you’ve come to expect from The Collection of  properties created by renowned hotelier, Liz McGrath.

Suites

That special something … The Suites are an excellent combination of luxury and comfort. Each Suite, at The Marine, is individually and tastefully decorated in a style recognisably Liz McGrath. All the décor draws its inspiration from the beautiful ocean surroundings. Four of the five Suites offer wonderful sea views, while the most spacious Suite showcases a side-sea view. Each Suite boasts a spacious separate lounge area, an en-suite bathroom, under floor heating and air-conditioning throughout. If you’re looking to experience true luxury during your stay at The Marine, the first step is a Suite.

RESTAURANTS

The Sun Lounge and Bar

On entering the hotel, guests can enjoy enticing views of the sea and the warm inviting lounge. The vast expanse of Walker Bay is drawn into the reception area, bringing light and amplifying the space. A sophisticated cocktail bar and lounge is available for both hotel residents and local visitors to relax and enjoy the view.

The Pavilion

The Pavilion is a relaxed yet sophisticated restaurant with an understated elegance. The view of the sea is exceptional and adds another dimension to the dining experience. It serves an array of the highest quality dishes with hints of contemporary South African cuisine that highlight the creative talents of a superb culinary team.

The Pavilion is open for dinner five nights a week Tuesday through to Saturday and open every morning for breakfast. During the months of July to November diners can view the whales from their table. The magnificent wall and ceiling lamps in this elegant restaurant are the originals which once graced the Bathing Pavilion at Muizenberg.

Seafood at the Marine

Liz McGrath’s inspiration for Seafood at the Marine came about after a chance visit to the seafood counter at Harrods in London. Seafood is a bright restaurant in the modern idiom. The style is informal and busy, with the emphasis on the freshness of the fish from Walker Bay, great style, sustainable seafood and friendly service. The open kitchen, with its young talented chefs, provides diners with a close-up view of the frenetic activity. The Seafood is modern yet has a relaxed feel to it. The floating glass wall panel with a wave design and beautiful lighting is a feature of the Seafood, which adds up to a visual feast to pre-empt the culinary feast.

The Collection Boutique and Travel Desk

The Collection Boutique is both modern, stylish and is situated in the heart of the hotel. Offering an extensive range of gifts from Polo clothing to local craft items and national curios. In addition, books and fine jewellery are also available.  Beautifully illustrated and informative books on the immediate natural environment, or the scenic wonders to be discovered when visiting The Marine at Hermanus are available. A wide variety of tours and activities in and around the Overberg area can be arranged.

POOLS

Heated Salt Water Pool

The solar panel heated swimming pool is salt-chlorinated. Towels are provided for use around the pool area and outside shower. During the day a waiter is on hand to assist with lunch and cocktail orders.

The Tidal Pool

Having travelled to Hermanus, a swim in the sea is a must ! Directly in front of the hotel is a tidal pool, where it is possible to swim as close as 100m from the whales. The hotel can supply guests with towels and a picnic.
